As with any cosmetic product, it is important to look at the composition of the hair care products you buy, but knowing how to decode labels is not always easy.

Is it really necessary to add chemical ingredients to a treatment to make it effective?

Here is a very simple product, far too practical to do without it, but yet too modified by manufacturers: dry shampoo

We analyze its composition for you!

Kézako dry shampoo?

Dry shampoo, as its name suggests, is a hair product to cleanse the roots of the hair without washing and therefore without water.

In the form of powders to spray or apply to the roots, it allows to absorb excess sebum and provide volume like after a real shampoo.

It is used for:

  • Degrease her hair before an evening, a date or a sports session
  • Space one or two day shampoos
  • Texturize flat hair and add shine “for a clean effect”

Where did this come from ?

Another grandmother's recipe! The dry shampoo is inspired by talc, deposited on the roots to degrease the hair.

Not necessarily very practical because it is quite volatile, the product has transformed to become an aerosol spray which allows the powder to be sprayed easily on the roots.

So-called “classic” aerosol dry shampoos

These dry shampoos are the most common on the market because their prices are very affordable. It is possible to find this type of product in supermarkets and even in pharmacies.

Like a hairspray, the spray pulverizes the powder. But even if its success is obvious, what exactly is in it?

Dry shampoo aerosol composition

Preservatives, endocrine disruptors, aluminum, polluting gases…

All these products irritate obviously the scalp, causing hair dryness or even the Hair loss.

Many people experience itching after using dry shampoo sprays, especially when used several times a week.

How to spot them: dissect the labels

The beginning of their list of ingredients very often begins with hydrocarbon gases from petrochemicals such as: propane, butane, isobutane.

These propellant gases are intended to generate pressure in the aerosol for the expulsion of the product in spray. Used as fuel in daily life, they are flammable and asphyxiating.

Among these ingredients we also very frequently find "acohol denat". It is a denatured alcohol which is used to provide freshness and which evaporates very quickly, causing a feeling of instant cleanliness. But the latter is very irritating and tends to strongly dry the skin.

Since the skin of the scalp is similar to baby's skin, it is not recommended to apply it to this area.

Most of these dry shampoos actually contain very little natural plant powder compared to the amount of chemical ingredients.

Yet all brands claim the benefits of plants #greenwashing

However, to be effective, a dry shampoo only needs to be composed of absorbent powders and nothing else!

Plant powders are very effective and already make natural dry shampoos successful: nettle powder, white clay, rice, corn…

To bring volume, once again plant powders are ideal. And then for the pleasant scent of the product: no need for artificial perfume either.

Natural plant powders

But obviously not all cosmetic brands adopt Naturalness as their main value. SO the capillary or ecological impact comes after everything else.

Thus chemical ingredients are added to keep the product longer, to tint the powder or to give the impression of a natural scent, etc.

Natural plant powders are therefore found at the bottom of the list ingredients, in minor quantities.

Yet it says “100% natural extracts” in large letters on the product, right?

So if you have already switched to Alum stone or natural deodorant ball to preserve your skin, why not do the same with your hair?

Adopt a 100% natural and minimalist dry shampoo !

Comparison of dry shampoos

Here is the example of 2 dry shampoos sold in pharmacies or supermarkets, claiming naturalness and the use of plants, on their labels.

One is in aerosol format, the other is in a gas-free spray:

  • Green Tea and Chamomile Dry Shampoo (aerosol):

Ingredients in order of proportions : Butane, Isobutane, Propane, Denatured alcohol, Rice starch, Perfume, Cetrimonium chloride, Distearyl dimethylammonium chloride, Glycerin, Green tea leaf extract, Wild chamomile extract

We see fuels, surfactants... green tea and chamomile only come at the end of the list.

  • Dry shampoo with oat milk (spray):

Ingredients in order of proportions : Rice starch, Aluminum salt, Hectorite, Oat flour, Kaolin clay, Silica, Cyclodextrin, Benzyl salicylate, Citronellol, Parfum, Geraniol, Hexylcinnamaldehyde, Hydroxycitronellal, Limonene, Linalool

There are already more natural ingredients but still, there are aluminum salts and a lot of allergens and preservatives.

1 - Arrowroot powder : to absorb excess sebum

2- Sweet orange powder : to bring shine, freshness to the roots and delicately perfume

3 - Kachur Sugandhi Powder : to texturize and densify hair (Indian powder whose use comes from Ayurveda, known to strengthen and stimulate growth)

And that's all ! A minimalist composition, with only high-end powders powerful active ingredients, to make the roots clean AND care for the scalp.
