The infernal spiral of oily hair... A real headache. The more you wash them, the faster they regrease!

For many, this vicious circle is a real daily problem: shiny, dull and flat hair the day after shampooing. Having oily hair is especially unsightly, even worse when it is accompanied by dandruff and discomfort on the scalp.

To get rid of excess sebum, it is first important to know the cause of the problem, different for each person.

Discover everything you need to know about oily hair and our natural tips for regaining a healthy scalp.

Sebum is the sap of our hair

And yes, sebum is not our enemy. Basically it's quite the opposite: it is the sap of our hair. Sebum is an oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands which are attached to hair follicles.

It serves to :

- Protect the scalp from external aggressions

- Maintain hydration scalp and hair lubrication

- Maintain balance bacterial flora

The problem ?

The scalp has a sensitivity equivalent to baby's skin. The slightest external aggression can irritate him and cause cascading reactions leading to overproduction of sebum.

What is an oily scalp?

Hair roots are said to be “oily” when natural sebum production is excessive. = hyper seborrhea.

Excessive production is generally linked to disruption of the sebaceous glands, then secreting too much sebum. The latter covers the scalp and spreads along the hair shafts.

Oily scalp

Visually, oily hair is recognizable by its wet and shiny appearance, whose color is duller and darker, and whose strands are heavier and less voluminous because the hair sticks to each other.

In addition to its unsightly appearance, oily scalp can often cause itching and redness, promoting the appearance of dandruff.

What causes an oily scalp?

Having hair that quickly becomes greasy is one of the most common hair problems.

Different causes can be the origin:

1. A hormonal problem, which may be linked to taking certain medications (treatments, contraception, etc.).

2. Stress or a significant emotional shock, causing the sebaceous glands to be upset.

3. A diet that is too fatty and sweet, increasing the quota of carbohydrates and lipids absorbed by the blood vessels irrigating the scalp.

4. Too frequent washing or too aggressive (sulfates, silicones), encouraging the scalp to produce more sebum to protect and hydrate itself.

5. Atmospheric conditions of the air conditioning and pollution type, drying and suffocating the scalp.

6. Using the hair dryer Too much heat can damage your scalp.

7. An unsuitable or dirty brush.

BUT BEWARE, it is also important to know that the so-called "oily" scalp type can simply be hereditary and that people with thin hair are more likely to have hair that becomes greasy quickly.
