Knowing the porosity of your hair is essential
Have you ever heard of the hair porosity ?
All commone the nature, type and texture of the hair, porosity is a indicator to consider for the maintenance of your hair.
Discover now the level of porosity of your hair and how does this influence your hair routine.
What do we mean by “hair porosity”?
Those are the cuticles of the hair (its small scales which allow the benefits of nutrition and hydration to be absorbed) which define, depending on their official, the porosity of the hair.
The curly, kinky, frizzy and wavy hair are usually more porous than straight hair, because their cuticles are more open at the curl level.
Hair porosity is not fixed and can evolve over time depending on the maintenance habits adopted.
Hair porosity level can be identified simply while observing the reaction of your hair to hydration.
The 3 levels of hair porosity:
Low porosity
(scales dense, tight, closed) |
Medium porosity
(open scales, normal) |
High porosity
(scales too open, damaged) |
The scales do not (or very little) allow hydration to pass through |
The scales allow hydration to pass through optimally |
Scales do not retain hydration |
What are the influencing factors of porosity?
- Hair type, texture and nature
- The treatments used (chemical products, coloring, straightening, etc.)
- The use ofheating devices (hair dryer, straightener, etc.)
- The eating habits
- Le brushing hair
The importance of knowing your hair porosity
L'hydration is a key step to maintain hair health.
Defining the porosity of your hair allows you to better understand their need for hydration and soadopt a adapted hair routine.
This allows to know what types of products to turn to (depending on the ingredients and texture of the treatment) and d'adopt good maintenance practices to optimize the level of hydration essential to your hair, over the long term.
Depending on whether it is low, medium or high, hair porosity is not maintained in the same way, here are the MakeMyMask tips and 3 natural routines to adopt to take care of your scalp and your lengths!

The hair not very porous they tend to take time to get wet, have a relatively long drying time, are easily fatty/oily and quickly become “hard” or “heavy” after using certain products.
Their scales are often very dense, tight and closed. The objective is to open the scales in order to properly penetrate hydration.
Our tips to know:
- Favor a routine consisting of “light” treatments and avoid protein treatments
- Wash your hair with warm or hot water to open the scales
- Use un care cap ou a hot towel when applying the treatment
- Seal in hydration with a fine, light vegetable oil

The hair very porous are often dull and brittle. They stay dry and rough, even after being hydrated, tangle easily and tend to inflate in case of humidity.
The hair treated with chemicals, accustomed to hairdryers or straighteners often have high porosity.
Their scales are too damaged and open, not retaining enough hydration. The objective is therefore to close the hair scales so that it can retain water.
