Ozempic, Mounjaro and hair loss: why and what to do?

What you must remember

Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro: the hair loss observed with GLP-1 is not due to the drug itself, but to the rapid weight loss, which triggers telogen effluvium. It appears two to four months later, is diffuse, and is reversible.

  • It's not the medication that attacks the follicle, but the rapid weight loss.
  • The hair loss appears two to four months later, in a diffuse manner.
  • It is reversible: the follicle is put on pause, never destroyed
  • An iron, ferritin and zinc assessment is the first useful step.
Ozempic, Mounjaro and hair loss: why and what to do?

You're losing weight, and your hair is falling out in clumps. The link is real, it applies to all GLP-1 molecules — Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro — but the mechanism isn't what you might think: it's not the medication that attacks the follicle.

Does Ozempic really cause hair loss?

A large study published in July 2026, involving nearly 40,000 diabetic patients, measured a modest but real increase in the risk of falls with GLP-1 compared to other treatments. The key finding of this research: the observed falls were non-scarring, and therefore reversible.

  • The risk exists, but it remains low in absolute value.
  • It concerns all GLP-1 molecules, not just Ozempic
  • It is proportional to the extent of weight loss, not to the molecule

This is the question I get asked most often right now, and my answer is always the same: it's not the medication that's attacking your hair, it's the speed at which your body is changing. The follicle isn't destroyed—it's put into a dormant state. And a dormant follicle restarts.

Why rapid weight loss causes hair loss

Any significant and rapid weight loss triggers the same phenomenon, whether it results from medication, a strict diet, or bariatric surgery: telogen effluvium. A large proportion of the hair follicles prematurely enter a resting phase , and these hairs only fall out several weeks later. Two factors often contribute: a decrease in the intake of protein, iron, and zinc that the follicle needs, and a restriction that is more rapid than the body can tolerate.

How to recognize a fall related to weight loss?

It is probably telogen effluvium if you check several of these points:

  • Hair loss that appeared two to four months after the start of treatment or diet
  • Diffuse hair loss across the entire head, without any bald patches.
  • Hair that comes out easily when washed and brushed
  • No pain, no redness, no scalp inflammation
  • A loss of overall density, without progressive improvement over several years

If, on the other hand, your part widens or your temples recede, it may be a hormonal drop that the episode has revealed rather than created.

"I had been using minoxidil for years but with many side effects. I tried this
I tried the serum, thinking it wouldn't work... and yet! The bald spot on the back of my head has clearly filled in. Amazing!

What can be done about hair loss related to weight loss?

The first step is medical, not cosmetic: talk to your doctor or pharmacist. A blood test can check your iron, ferritin, and zinc levels, and more gradual weight loss can help minimize the problem. Never change your medication on your own.

In terms of care, the goal is not to stop hair loss which will stop on its own, but to support regrowth: stimulate microcirculation of the scalp, provide cofactors for keratin synthesis, and avoid aggressive procedures during this fragile phase.

F.A.Q

Does Ozempic cause hair loss?
Indirectly. A large 2026 study showed a modest increase in the risk of hair loss with GLP-1, but the mechanism involved is rapid weight loss, not toxicity of the molecule on the follicle. The observed hair loss is non-scarring, therefore reversible.
Does Mounjaro also cause hair loss?
Yes, like all GLP-1 molecules. The risk follows a simple logic: the greater and more rapid the weight loss, the more likely telogen effluvium becomes. Since tirzepatide causes more pronounced weight loss, the phenomenon is slightly more frequent.
How long after weight loss does hair fall out?
Two to four months. The follicles switch to a resting phase at the time of the metabolic shock, but the affected hairs remain in place for several weeks before being expelled.
Does hair grow back after hair loss related to weight loss?
Yes, in the vast majority of cases. Telogen effluvium interrupts the cycle without damaging the follicle. The shedding lasts three to six months, then density gradually returns once weight stabilizes and nutrition is restored.
Should you stop treatment if your hair falls out?
No, and definitely not on your own initiative. Talk to your doctor: they are the only one who can assess the benefit of the treatment against this side effect, and adjust it if necessary.
What tests should be ordered in case of a fall after weight loss?
A blood test checking iron and ferritin levels, zinc, and thyroid function. These three causes are common after significant weight loss, and they are the only ones that are potentially correctable.
Does bariatric surgery also cause hair loss?
Yes, through the same mechanism, often even more pronounced: weight loss is rapid and nutrient absorption is altered. Post-operative nutritional monitoring is crucial for hair regrowth.
