Trichology: a science at the service of your hair

What you must remember

Trichology studies the scalp and hair as a single organ. It allows us to trace a symptom back to its cause: flaking can indicate three different conditions, and hair loss can be reactive or hormonal. This distinction determines the entire treatment plan.

  • Trichology studies the scalp and hair as a living organ
  • The hair shaft is dead: everything happens in the follicle.
  • The same symptom can have opposite causes.
  • The trichologist observes and guides, the dermatologist diagnoses
Trichology

Trichology studies the scalp and hair as a complete organ, with its own mechanisms, pathologies, and examinations. This discipline allows us to trace a visible symptom—hair loss, flaking, thinning—back to its true cause, rather than simply treating what is visible.

What is trichology?

Trichology is the scientific study of hair and scalp: their structure, physiology, and disorders. It focuses on what happens beneath the surface, where hair is produced, rather than the visible part.

  • It analyzes the condition of the scalp, its hydrolipidic film and its microbiome
  • She evaluates the hair cycle and the quality of the fiber produced
  • She distinguishes between reversible disorders and those that progress over time.

Trichology has changed the way I talk. When you look at a scalp with a trichoscope, you no longer see "hair loss": you see miniaturized follicles, or inflammatory scaling, or simply a congested scalp. Three different images, three different protocols. That's the difference between treating a symptom and treating a cause.

Why the scalp is central to trichology

Because the hair shaft is a keratinized structure, therefore dead. No treatment regenerates it: it protects and sheaths it, which remains useful but purely aesthetic. The follicle, on the other hand, is a living, vascularized organ, where each new centimeter is produced. This is the principle of scalp care , and it's what trichology formalized long before the term existed.

When should I consult a trichologist?

A trichological assessment is useful in several situations:

  • A hair loss that lasts for more than three months or that recurs regularly
  • A widening ray, receding gulfs, a progressive refinement
  • Flaking or itching that resists a suitable routine
  • A routine followed for months without the slightest result
  • Doubt about the nature of the problem, before investing in treatment

An important caveat: the trichologist is not a doctor. He observes, guides and advises, but he does not make a medical diagnosis — that is the role of the dermatologist, to whom he refers as soon as a pathology is involved.

"I had been using minoxidil for years but with many side effects. I tried this
I tried the serum, thinking it wouldn't work... and yet! The bald spot on the back of my head has clearly filled in. Amazing!

How to apply trichology to your routine

The trichological approach consists of a sequence, valid regardless of the problem. First, the cause is identified, then the scalp is cleansed—exfoliating the roots, washing with a pH 5 solution that respects the skin barrier—and finally, the active ingredients corresponding to the identified mechanism are applied over the course of a hair growth cycle. Treating in the wrong order means applying effective active ingredients to a scalp that cannot receive them.

F.A.Q

What is a trichologist?
A trichologist is a professional trained in the study of the scalp and hair. They observe the condition of the scalp, identify the likely cause of a problem, and recommend a suitable routine. They are not a medical doctor: they do not make diagnoses and refer patients to a dermatologist as soon as a medical condition is present.
What is the difference between a trichologist and a dermatologist?
A dermatologist is a medical doctor: they diagnose and prescribe treatments. A trichologist specializes in the scalp and hair, and provides guidance on routines and treatments. The two approaches are complementary, never interchangeable.
When should you consult a trichologist?
When hair loss lasts more than three months, when a bald patch appears, when flakes persist despite a suitable routine, or when several months of treatment have yielded no results, a trichological consultation often prevents the accumulation of unsuitable products.
How is a trichological assessment carried out?
It begins with an interview about medical history, lifestyle, and the history of hair loss, followed by an examination of the scalp, often using a trichoscope. This examination allows the doctor to see what a mirror cannot: the condition of the follicles and the nature of the flaking.
Is trichology a recognized science?
It's a field of study focused on hair and scalp, with its own literature and examination methods, but the profession of trichologist is not regulated in France. Training and levels of expertise therefore vary considerably: inquire about the practitioner's background.
