Broken hair or new growth? A trichologist reveals how to tell the difference.

What you must remember

Short, thin hairs on the top of the head: regrowth or breakage? A regrowth hair has a fine, tapered tip; a broken hair has a clean break of consistent thickness. The location confirms this: roots for the former, lengths and areas of tension for the latter.

  • A new growth has a fine, tapered tip; a broken hair has a clean break.
  • New growth appears at the roots, breakage occurs along the lengths.
  • With micro-infusion, the first regrowth is visible in 8-12 weeks
  • A temporary drop in power at startup is normal and transient.
Broken hair or new growth? A trichologist reveals how to tell the difference.

You discover small, short hairs sticking up on the top of your head. Good news or bad news? It all depends on one detail you can observe yourself: the shape of their tips.

How to recognize regrowth from a broken hair?

A new hair emerges from the follicle with a naturally thin, tapered tip that gradually thins towards the end. A broken hair, on the other hand, has a clean break: its thickness remains constant all the way to the end, which is straight, sometimes split.

  • Repellent tapered tip, soft texture, often lighter and downy at first
  • Broken hair : clean or split end, uniform thickness along the entire length
  • Fallen hair : presence of a small white bulb at the root — it is neither broken nor regrowing

I always ask for any hair found on the pillow or in the brush to be brought to me. In thirty seconds, we know what we're talking about: a tapered end means regrowth, and we continue. A clean break means mechanical damage, and we change the technique, not the treatment.

Where do they appear? The second decisive clue

The location confirms what the tip suggests. Regrowth appears in the root zone, on the top of the head, along the part, or at the temples—where miniaturization was taking place. It is evenly distributed across the affected area. Breakage, on the other hand, is concentrated where tension is exerted: on the lengths, at the level of the elastic band, or in the areas most frequently brushed.

Micro-infusion: when should the first regrowth appear?

The hair cycle imposes its rhythm, and it is necessary to know it in order not to misinterpret what one observes.

  • Weeks 2 to 8 — a temporary shedding may occur: the follicles that restart expel the resting hair they contained.
  • Weeks 8 to 12 — the first regrowth becomes visible, thin and short, against the light or along the parting
  • Months 3 to 6 — these hairs thicken and grow longer
  • Months 6 to 12 — the overall density becomes perceptible in the photo

The most reliable indicator remains a photograph: same angle, same light, every month. With the naked eye and on a daily basis, no one can see their own density change.

I tried the serum, thinking it wouldn't work... and yet! The bald spot on the back of my head has clearly filled in. Amazing!

What to do based on what you observe

If these are regrowth hairs, don't change anything: it's a sign that the protocol is working, and the most common mistake is stopping too soon. Continue the micro-infusion two to three times a week and protect these new hairs, which are naturally fragile.

If it's breakage, the anti-hair loss treatment isn't the problem: it's the technique and the condition of the hair fiber that need correcting. Exfoliate the scalp, wash with a pH 5 product to limit swelling of the hair fiber, nourish the lengths, and detangle only on damp hair coated with conditioner.

F.A.Q

How can you tell if they are new growth or broken hairs?
Observe the tip of the hair. New growth has a fine, tapered end; a broken hair has a clean break, with a consistent thickness all the way to the tip. The presence of a white bulb at the root, on the other hand, indicates a hair that has fallen out naturally.
Are the small hairs on the top of the head regrowth?
Most often, yes, especially if they are evenly distributed along the part or crown and have a tapered tip. Breakage, however, is concentrated along the lengths and in areas of tension—elastic bands, tight ties.
How long before you see regrowth with micro-infusion?
The first visible regrowth usually appears between eight and twelve weeks. It is initially short and thin, then thickens over the following months. Overall density can be assessed after a minimum of six months.
Is it normal to lose more hair at the beginning of an anti-hair loss treatment?
A temporary shedding of hair in the first two months is common and actually a good sign: the follicles that are restarting are expelling the resting hair they contained. It resolves itself.
Why do my hairs always break in the same place?
Because the tension is exerted repeatedly there—elastic band height, friction zone—and because the fiber is often already weakened. A cuticle depleted of lipids breaks much sooner under tension.
Can the new growth break in turn?
Yes, and it's common: this hair is fine, short, and still fragile. Avoid straightening it, tying it up tightly, or brushing it dry—this is the most common reason for hair density to stagnate despite effective treatment.
